Computer staff pay rises at 4.9%

Computer staff saw their basic pay and bonus rise by an average of 4.9% over the past year, according to CELRE's autumn 2008 Computer Staff Salary Survey.

The report, published today, is based on pay data from 75,183 individual employees in 590 workplaces - the largest sample in the survey's 40-year history.

CELRE reports twice a year on computer staff pay, and while this autumn's 4.9% figure is up from the 4.7% recorded in autumn 2007, it is down from a peak of 5.7% just six months ago.

As a result, CELRE's salary tables show national average basic pay plus bonus figures of:

  • £108,307 for a senior function head;
  • £89,925 for a function head or head consultant;
  • £74,247 for a department manager or principal consultant; and
  • £58,488 for a manager or senior consultant.

The report also includes salary figures for a further six non-managerial grades in IT. More detailed breakdowns of data are available by job function and seniority, location and industry, along with further information on the impact of key IT skills on pay levels.

Organisations which participate and subscribe can use the main tables in the two-volume report, or construct their own tables using the CELRE JobPricing module.

Further spreadsheet-based tools are also available for those wanting to carry out pay benchmarking. CELRE's job definitions are fully compatible with those in the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA).

Publication of the Computer Staff Salary Survey for autumn 2008 marks the conclusion of this year's round of pay research.

Figures published on a range of industries and job types for autumn 2008 show that computer staff pay rises have held up well by comparison with some groups, with HR practitioners and finance staff already seeing the first signs that economic problems are having an impact on pay growth (see chart).
