Mark Crail

As head of salary surveys and HR data benchmarking services for XpertHR, I oversee the collection and publication of pay data through our Job Pricing tool and our wider HR research programme which forms the core of XpertHR Benchmarking.

I have written on a wide range of employment issues, but have a particular interest in the organisation and structure of the HR function itself. Other interests include collective employment relations and the role of trade unions, and the rather broad topic of innovation – how organisations respond to change and either manage it or are reshaped by forces beyond their control.

Away from the office, I have an interest in social and political history. I write for a number of family history magazines, and in my spare time run the Chartist Ancestors and Trade Union Ancestors websites.  My book combining these interests came out in the autumn of 2009.

I have been with IRS since 2001. But having started my career in local newspaper journalism nearly 30 years ago, I have worked for daily and weekly papers, political journals, a trade union and in print and online for a public sector management titles.
