Consultation on caste discrimination
Consultation not yet launched
The Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013 prescribes that the Government must add "caste" to the definition of "race" under the Equality Act 2010. According to the Caste legislation introduction - programme and timetable the Government indicated that it would launch a consultation on its proposals for caste discrimination, including whether or not, and if so how, "caste" should be defined in the legislation, with a further consultation to be published on draft legislation, with the intention for legislative changes to come into effect by early 2015. However, due to the legislative timetable, as a result of the general election on 7 May 2015, no consultation was held.
On 2 September 2016, the Government announced that it will conduct a consultation on whether or not additional measures are needed in the Equality Act 2010 to protect victims of discrimination based on caste, with further details and the timing of the consultation to be announced in due course.
