Consultation on employed students and the accommodation offset for the national minimum wage

Close date: 12 April 2011

The Government consults on possible changes to the national minimum wage rules on employer-provided accommodation in relation to students who work part-time for their educational institution. The rules allow employers that provide accommodation for workers to count it as a benefit in kind towards payment of the national minimum wage, up to a specified limit. It seeks input on the extent to which higher education institutions provide accommodation to students and also employ them part time and asks whether or not higher education institutions should be excluded from the accommodation offset rules.
