Consultation on European Commission proposals to amend the Pregnant Workers Directive

Close date: 22 June 2009

The Government consults on European Commission proposals to amend the Pregnant Workers Directive. The proposals include increasing the minimum period of maternity leave under the Directive from 14 weeks to 18 weeks and extending the period of compulsory maternity leave from two weeks to six weeks. The proposals also introduce the principle of full pay during maternity leave, although member states may set a cap as long as the cap is at least equal to the amount of sick pay that a woman would receive.
