Consultation on indirect employee ownership
Close date: 26 September 2013
The Government consults on proposals for two tax-relief structures to support indirect employee ownership. It aims to promote awareness of indirect employee ownership and increase its attractiveness. The first structure is capital gains tax relief on the sale of a controlling interest in a business into an indirect employee-ownership structure. The second is an income tax and national insurance contributions exemption for employees, where a significant proportion of the company is owned by a trust whose purpose is to benefit its employees, in addition to an employer national insurance contributions exemption. The Government wishes to learn more about the nature and number of existing indirect-ownership structures, and needs to identify a definition of an indirectly employee-owned company.
