Northern Ireland

7.802

General: The law relating to industrial relations and collective rights in Northern Ireland mirrors that in England and Wales and is governed principally by:

  • the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1995 SI 1995/1980 (NI 12), which mirrors the provisions of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992; and
  • the Employment Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1999 SI 1999/2790 (NI 9) which mirrors the Employment Relations Act 1999.

While the provisions contained in these Orders mirror the corresponding provisions in the Acts, it should be noted that applications for compulsory trade union recognition in Northern Ireland are dealt with by the Industrial Court and not the Central Arbitration Committee.
