Are union members entitled to be paid for time off to take part in union activities?

No. Union members have no right to be paid for time off to take part in union activities. The Acas code of practice on time off for trade union duties and activities suggests that employers may want to consider payment in certain circumstances, for example to ensure that workplace meetings enjoy a good turnout and are therefore more representative of the workforce, or to ensure that employees have access to the services of union learning representatives.
