Yes, an employee can vary the start date of his or her adoption leave period by giving the employer notice at least 28 days before the new start date or, if this is not reasonably practicable, as soon as is reasonably practicable. If the employee wishes the leave period to start on the date on which the child is placed with him or her, rather than on a specified date, he or she must give notice of the variation at least 28 days before the expected date of placement or, if this is not reasonably practicable, as soon as is reasonably practicable.
