Can an employer insist that a part-time employee arrange all her antenatal appointments for times when she is not working?
Employers can ask employees to make their antenatal appointments outside working hours but should bear in mind that most women will have very little control over the day or time of appointments. Antenatal clinics and consultants' appointments are generally on set days and times each week, and often run late. Part-time employees are entitled to paid time off for antenatal care in the same way as full-time employees. They are entitled to take the time off during working hours if it is not possible or reasonable to arrange the appointment outside their working hours. Therefore an employer cannot insist that a part-time employee arrange all her appointments for times when she is not working.
