Can an intern waive his or her right to be paid the national minimum wage?

No. Even where an intern is prepared to work unpaid to gain work experience in a competitive industry, if he or she qualifies for the national minimum wage, the employer cannot agree that the placement will be unpaid, or that the intern will be paid below the relevant rate. A worker cannot waive the right to be paid the national minimum wage; such an agreement would be void and ineffective.
