How is the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims calculated?

Employees must have at least two years' continuous service to claim unfair dismissal (except in specified circumstances). The period of service begins on the first day of employment and ends on the effective date of termination. For example, an employee whose employment began on 10 June 2016 will have the right to claim unfair dismissal if he or she is dismissed with an effective date of termination on or after 9 June 2018.
