Is an employer required to cover the cost of glasses where the employee does not need them solely for VDU work?

No. An employer is under an obligation to pay for glasses only where an employee's normal glasses cannot be used for VDU work and he or she needs special glasses. According to the Health and Safety Executive only a minority (less than 10%) of the population need special glasses or other corrective appliances for display screen work. Where an individual falls into this category, the employer is required to meet only the basic cost of the glasses and the employee must pay for any extras, such as designer frames or lenses with optional treatments that are not necessary for work.
