Is it permissible for an employer to stipulate in a job advert that candidates must be "recent graduates"?

It is not advisable to advertise for "recent graduates". It is likely that the majority of recent graduates in any year will be in a young age group, therefore this stipulation could have the effect of indirectly discriminating against other potential candidates on grounds of age.

Older applicants are less likely to be able to comply with the requirement to be a recent graduate, although they may still have the requisite skills and knowledge for the job.

Unless there is an objectively justifiable reason for seeking recent graduates, there is a risk of committing indirect age discrimination in making this stipulation.
