What does the Health and Safety Executive do?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the national non-departmental regulatory body responsible for promoting the cause of better health and safety at work through providing an effective regulatory framework and securing compliance with the law. The HSE is responsible for the enforcement of health and safety legislation in higher-risk sectors. It prepares, following consultation, proposals for regulations and codes of practice to submit to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. It also maintains the Employment Medical Advisory Service.
