What is the purpose of a disciplinary interview?

A disciplinary interview provides the opportunity for the employee and manager to engage in a full and frank two-way discussion about the matter under review. The interview allows the employee to put forward his or her side of the story and/or provide an explanation. There should be agreement about the means of achieving an improvement in the individual's performance or conduct, or of ensuring that there is no repeat of the misconduct. A decision about whether or not to impose a penalty will also need to be taken.
