What should a manager do if he or she suspects that an employee has an alcohol or drugs dependency?

If a manager suspects that an employee has an alcohol or drugs dependency, it would be advisable for the manager to refer the employee to an occupational doctor for an initial review of the employee's state of health and possible dependency. Depending on the doctor's advice, it might then be appropriate to offer the employee time off work - ideally with pay - to undergo appropriate medical treatment and/or counselling. The overall approach should be one of support not blame.
