Why is it important for an employer to keep the risk assessment for a new mother under review?
An employer should monitor and review regularly an individual risk assessment that it has carried out in respect of a new mother, to ensure that it is taking appropriate measures at the appropriate time to avoid and minimise risks.
Processes, working conditions, and physical, biological and chemical agents can affect a woman and her newborn child differently at different times. For example, what may present a hazard to a mother or her child when she is breastfeeding may not present a risk when she stops breastfeeding. Similarly, if there is a change in the mother's working conditions, for example the place of work or the equipment she uses, this may alter the risks that the employer should assess and the actions that it needs to take to avoid them.
