What is the right to time off for dependants?

What requirements are there on an employee to inform the employer that he or she is taking time off for dependants?
Employees have no statutory right to be paid for time off for
dependants. Whether or not they are paid will be dependent on the discretion of
the employer, or the terms of the contract.
