Pregnant women and new mothers have a number of statutory rights including the right to paid time off work to enable attendance at antenatal appointments, provided that attendance has been recommended by a doctor, registered midwife or registered nurse, the right to suitable rest facilities, and the right not to be victimised, penalised or subjected to any detriment for taking advantage of their rights in pregnancy, childbirth or maternity.
