How to handle deductions from wages and attachment of earnings

  • If deductions need to be made from an employee's wages, make sure that the employee has given his or her prior written consent to the deduction, unless it is clearly set out in the contract of employment of which the employee has, and has duly signed, a copy.

  • Remember that an attachment of earnings order is enforceable against you as the employer and failure to comply can result in a fine in the magistrates' court.
