The facts

Mr Duffy was made redundant on 30 November 1990 after working for the respondent company for more than 18 years as a foreman painter. On 30 October, the contract on which he was working had come to an end and he was put on standby on full pay plus bonus on the understanding that he would be found alternative employment when and if more work came in.
