In Telfer v Ministry of Defence a Southampton employment tribunal (Chair: J Simpson) holds that a female naval rating whose lack of seagoing experience meant that she was passed over for promotion was indirectly discriminated against on grounds of sex. It awards compensation of £121,567, including £20,000 for injury to feelings which were exacerbated by the navy refusing to acknowledge it was at fault.
