Race hate-mail suspect victim of race bias

An Asian police officer who was suspended from duty following an investigation into allegations that he had sent racist hate mail to black colleagues was unlawfully discriminated against on grounds of race, rules a London North employment tribunal (Chair: J R Hill) in Virdi v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis.

Gurpal Virdi was a sergeant in one of the three police stations in the Ealing division of the Metropolitan Police. Between 24 and 31 December 1997 a number of ethnic minority officers in the Ealing division, including Sergeant Virdi, received through the internal mail a memorandum containing a picture of a black face saying: "Not wanted.
