School liable for racial abuse

In Bennett v Essex County Council and others the EAT has found a school liable under the Race Relations Act 1976 for racial abuse of a black teacher by its pupils.

During the first four months of her employment as a teacher in Basildon, Mrs Bennett, who is of African-Caribbean ethnic origin, was exposed to a number of incidents of racial abuse by pupils, including the use of expressions such as "golliwogs" and "jungle bunny".
