Ban on smoking in private cars carrying a person aged under 18 comes into force

Implementation date: 1 October 2015

The Smoke-free (Private Vehicles) Regulations 2015 (SI 286/2015) amend the Smoke-free (Exemptions and Vehicles) Regulations 2007 (SI 765/2007) to ban smoking in private cars carrying a person aged under 18, with the aim of protecting children from the health risks associated with exposure to second hand smoke in vehicles. The new law means that it is a criminal offence to smoke in a private vehicle with a person aged under 18 or to allow smoking in a private vehicle with a person aged under 18.
