Race Relations Act 1976 (Seamen Recruited Abroad) Order 2003 comes into force
Implementation date: 19 July 2003
The Order amends the Race Relations Act 1976,
section 9, which permits racial discrimination when an employer engages a
seafarer on a ship and the seafarer applied, or was engaged, outside Great
Britain. The amendments reduce the scope of the exception so that the only
aspect of a person's employment in which there may be discrimination is pay
(which includes retirement or death benefits) and the only ground on which there
may be discrimination is the ground of nationality. The Order
can be viewed on the OPSI website.
