Jury returns landmark fire verdict

A London hotel and its sole director have been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £260,000 for fire safety failures that were identified following a blaze at the hotel.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB), which took the prosecution, believes it is the first time that a jury has convicted a defendant under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which substituted a modern risk-based fire safety regime for a hitherto highly prescriptive approach.
