International: Call centre employment and HR practices examined

Research published in May 2007 analyses employment and HR management in call centres in 17 countries worldwide. It finds that the widespread view of call centres as “electronic sweatshops” with low pay, poor quality of work and little collective representation of workers is not true in all countries and types of call centre.
Austria: Union membership falls

Figures published by the Austrian Trade Union Confederation (ÖGB) show that in 2006 its membership fell by 4.75%, or 63,000 members, to 1,272,000. This was a significantly greater fall than during the previous year, when the ÖGB lost 22,500 members.

Hourly labour costs in western German manufacturing industry in 2002 were 28% above the average among its competitor countries, according to the most recent annual report issued by the Institute of the German Economy. In eastern Germany, however, the hourly rate was on a level with that in Italy. Overall, the report noted that since 1980, in all the countries surveyed, non-wage labour costs increased more steeply than wages.

The overall message of the 2003 report to policymakers is that the workforce must expand through the integration of under-represented groups. Crucially, there must be investment in skills.
