UK 2009 pay rises among lowest in the world

Salary increases for UK workers in 2009 will be among the lowest in the world, with the median basic salary increase expected to be worth only 1%, according to a study carried out by global management consultancy Hay Group. This is significantly below the median global projected pay rise of 2.8%.

This was the first strike-free quarter since detailed quarterly records were first compiled in 1985.
Ireland: Four out of 10 multinationals do not recognise unions

A recent survey finds that around 60% of multinational companies operating in Ireland recognise trade unions in at least some of their sites. However, the figure is only 40% among US-owned companies, which form the single largest group of multinationals in Ireland. When multinationals that recognise unions at existing Irish operations open new sites, many of these sites are non-union.

International: Call centre employment and HR practices examined

Research published in May 2007 analyses employment and HR management in call centres in 17 countries worldwide. It finds that the widespread view of call centres as “electronic sweatshops” with low pay, poor quality of work and little collective representation of workers is not true in all countries and types of call centre.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has recently published its estimates of industrial earnings over the year to December 2006. Figures indicate that the average gross weekly earnings of industrial workers in all sectors rose by 5.3%, to €623.69, in December 2006, compared with €592.56 in December 2005. Earnings rose by 3.8% compared with the previous quarter, when they were €600.85.
