    Our 2013 XpertHR annual leave survey provides a view of current annual leave policies at 208 organisations, covering 391 employee groups and a total of over 197,000 employees. We find that the median number of days given to full-time employees as paid annual leave is 25, showing no change from our 2011 research, and nine employers in 10 offer bank or public holidays as paid leave in addition to the basic holiday entitlement.

    Interpretations of the Working Time Directive within the European Court of Justice have left the relationship between paid holiday entitlement and sickness absence very unclear. We asked employers how they are managing their approach to employees who become ill or injured on or before scheduled annual leave in the face of some contradictory legal positions, and find that almost all have a clear, laid-down policy in place.
