Paternity and adoption leave: the 2010 survey

IRS research finds that although half the organisations in our survey enhance paternity leave beyond the statutory minimum, fathers and partners of new mothers are still reluctant to use it, especially if the enhanced wage falls short of full pay.

Key points

  • According to the 2010 IRS survey on paternity and adoption leave, an average 2.7% of employees took paternity leave over the past two years; at six in 10 (59%) of the 103 organisations employees are reluctant to take paternity leave due to the reduction in pay, and at half (46%) male employees are nervous to use flexible working for fear it will affect their job prospects.
