Deal with a case of persistent short-term sickness absence
Key points
Where an employee has frequent short periods of sickness absence, the employer should ensure that the employee follows its procedures relating to notification and evidence of sickness.
The employer should investigate the reasons for the absence. It may be appropriate to obtain a medical report on the employee, to ascertain, among other things, whether there is an underlying cause of the absences.
Depending on the circumstances, it may be appropriate for the employer to instigate either its disciplinary or capability process.
