Ensure that workers are receiving the minimum weekly rest periods provided for by the Working Time Regulations 1998

Key points

  • Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, workers are entitled to a minimum uninterrupted weekly rest period. The minimum rest period can be applied either on a weekly or a fortnightly basis.
  • The length of the minimum rest period required is different for adults and young workers.
  • There are a number of exclusions to the right to minimum weekly rest periods, for example in relation to shift workers when they change shift. However, in these circumstances, the worker is entitled to an equivalent period of compensatory rest.
