Take steps to ensure that the workforce is inclusive of transgender people

Key points

  • There is a tendency for employers to be reactive rather than proactive in relation to transgender equality, taking action only when an employee declares that he or she intends to undergo gender reassignment.
  • However, while this approach may meet the needs of one or two individuals, it will not result in a more "trans-friendly" workplace unless it is supported by other activities, and is unlikely to encourage the recruitment and retention of transgender employees.
  • Employers should therefore consider taking action to create an inclusive workplace where all employees are recognised and valued, regardless of their gender identity, and where barriers that prevent people from feeling at ease and respected are removed.
