Menopause and menstruation (periods)

Zeba Sayed Editor's message: The impact of gender-specific health issues on the workforce has been in the spotlight over the last few years.

More employers seem open to implementing menopause policies and offering support. Whether to introduce a menstruation policy is a question that employers may be considering following reports in the press that Spain could be introducing menstrual leave. This is extra time off work for those experiencing severe period pain.

There are no immediate plans for the UK Government to legislate on menstrual leave. There is also no legal requirement for an employer to have a menopause or menstruation policy.

However, having a menopause and menstruation policy in place sends a strong message that you take gender-specific health issues seriously. It shows that you value your employees and that you are invested in their health and wellbeing.

Ultimately, a happy and healthy workforce is a more productive workforce.
