Noelle MurphyEditor's message: Getting the organisation of the HR function right is key to effectively delivering the HR strategy. With the ratio of employees to HR practitioners dropping, we can see how the function has shifted from a primarily transactional role to a more strategic one within organisations.

It is not only the number of people employed in HR roles that is important to the strategic effectiveness of the function, but also the skills and experience they carry. We have seen a growth in the demand for HR people to have skills in dealing with metrics, in order to drive HR metrics' programmes within organisations. While not currently part of the essential criteria required for HR practitioners, it will be interesting to see how this develops over time.
