Editor's message: Adoption leave and pay is available to male and female employees who have been matched with a child for adoption, including employees adopting from abroad, provided that they meet the eligibility criteria. The right to take adoption leave and pay extends to parents in a surrogacy situation and approved prospective adopters who look after children as part of a "fostering to adopt" arrangement.

Employees have various rights and obligations in relation to adoption leave and pay. Throughout their career, line managers may not have the opportunity to manage many employees who take adoption leave and pay, so it is important for employers to provide adequate guidance to help them through the process, as well as support the employee.
