Editor's message: Your organisation is under no obligation to pay women their full pay when they are on statutory maternity leave. Instead, you must pay eligible women statutory maternity pay (SMP) for up to 39 weeks. The SMP rate is set by the Government and increased on 2 April 2017. Whether or not an employee is entitled to SMP depends on various factors, including her length of service.

Many employers provide enhanced maternity pay, as they believe that it can strengthen employee engagement and therefore have a positive impact on retention rates.
