Maternity pay

Editor's message: Employers are under no obligation to pay women their full pay when they are on statutory maternity leave. Instead they must pay eligible women statutory maternity pay (SMP) for up to 39 weeks, which is at a rate set by the Government. Whether or not an employee is entitled to SMP depends on various factors, including her length of service.

Many employers provide enhanced maternity pay, as they believe that it can strengthen employee engagement and therefore have a positive impact on retention rates.
