Notice periods

Stephen SimpsonEditor's message: Employment contracts should include a notice periods clause. This ensures that both you and your employees are clear about how much notice needs to be given when a contract of employment is terminated by dismissal or resignation.

The notice period provided for in the contract should be at least equivalent to the statutory minimum.

For example, if your organisation terminates an employee's contract after one month but before two years' service has been completed, the statutory notice that it must give the employee is one week.
