Supermarket chain Asda has awarded its 143,182 hourly paid retail staff a 2% basic pay rise, effective from 1 October 2009. The "established" job rate for an adult checkout operator or sales assistant now ranges from £6.24 an hour for staff in provincial stores to £7.10 for sales assistants based in London.

A 2.5% pay pot was also allocated to fund individual performance-related awards for Asda's 10,500 retail managers and head office staff, effective from 1 April 2009.

In the previous pay review, hourly paid retail staff received a two-stage award over 18 months, which comprised a 2.5% increase from 1 April 2008 and a further 1.5% rise over 12 months from 1 October.
