Housing sector pay growth slows

The latest XpertHR salary survey for the housing sector shows how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected employee reward over the past 12 months. The 2020 edition of the XpertHR Housing Sector Salary Survey shows that the median increase in basic salary is now just 1.5% per year - one percentage point lower than in 2019.

The survey paints an even starker picture when broken down by job level. Basic salary increases were heavily skewed towards employees in the two most junior levels of responsibility, largely owing to the April 2020 uprating of the national minimum wage. Employees in more senior job levels typically received no basic salary increases at all this year.

The outlook for 2021 remains uncertain. Employers in the housing sector currently predict basic salary increases of between one and two percent next year but the ongoing pandemic means that there is far less certainty than in recent history.
