Shared parental leave and pay

Shared parental leave allows new mothers to curtail their maternity leave to share up to 50 weeks' leave with their partner. They can also halt their statutory maternity pay or maternity allowance and share any untaken pay with their partner. Similar rules apply for adoptive parents.

Shared parental leave is flexible. It can be taken in instalments, with employees interspersing periods of leave with periods of work. In addition, the two parents can take leave at the same time or separately.
