Are there any steps that a line manager should take when an employee returns to work after a period of long-term sickness absence?

The line manager should meet with the employee on or before the first day back to discuss their capabilities, and review whether or not any special arrangements and support need to be provided initially. The manager should consider any recommendations given by the employee's doctor on a statement of fitness for work or "fit note". The manager should be careful not to overload the employee with work at first, but at the same time ensure that they are given meaningful tasks. Showing the employee that their return is welcomed will also be important.
