How can sick pay be used as a tool for managing attendance?
Some discretion over the payment of contractual sick pay can allow management to decline or withdraw payment from a particular employee if there is proper reason to do so, for example if the employee did not properly notify his or her absence or where he or she is under investigation for a disciplinary offence. It will, however, be important to ensure that managers do not exercise discretion arbitrarily or inconsistently. Managers should therefore be provided with written guidelines on the factors that should, and should not, be taken into account when deciding whether or not to grant sick pay. Employees should also be informed of how the rules on sick pay operate.
