If a new employee is working only a few hours every week on a six-month contract does he or she really require a written statement of employment particulars?

Yes. Employees with contracts that last for one month or more must be given a written statement of particulars setting out the key terms and conditions of their employment within two months of starting work. The right to a written statement applies to part-time employees as well as full-time employees, irrespective of hours worked.
