In relation to the Data Protection Act 1998, what does "processing" data mean?

"Data processing" includes the collection, recording, holding, organising, retrieval, alteration, adapting, disclosing and destruction of information held about an individual, whether manually or on computer. "Processing" therefore covers all aspects of handling information about individuals, starting with the gathering of the information, continuing through its storage and use, and including its disclosure and eventual erasure or destruction.
