What are the key steps for carrying out a workplace risk assessment?
Employers are required to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of health and safety risks to their employees and others (reg.3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/3242). The Health and Safety Executive identifies five steps required for carrying out a workplace health and safety risk assessment. These are:
- identify the hazards;
- decide who might be harmed and how;
- evaluate the risks from the hazards and decide on precautions;
- record significant findings; and
- regularly review the risk assessment and revise as necessary.
