What evidence can an employer request to show that an employee is entitled to parental bereavement leave and pay?
Employees do not have to provide any evidence of their child's death (such as a copy of a death certificate) when notifying the employer of their intention to take statutory parental bereavement leave. Employers should not request this.
To be eligible for statutory parental bereavement pay, the employee must provide to the employer in writing:
- the employee's name;
- the date of the child's death; and
- a declaration that their relationship with the child entitles them to claim statutory parental bereavement pay.
