When does shared parental leave come in?
The Shared Parental Leave Regulations 2014 (SI 2014/3050) apply in relation to babies due on or after 5 April 2015 and children who are placed for adoption on or after 5 April 2015 (or who enter Great Britain on or after that date if adopted from overseas).
An eligible employee must give at least eight weeks' notice of intention to take shared parental leave. An employee can choose to take shared parental leave at any time before the child's first birthday or before the first anniversary of the adoption placement.
From 1 December 2014, when the Regulations came into force, employees have protection against being subjected to a detriment or unfairly dismissed in connection with taking shared parental leave.
